June 22-26th – Ages 10-13
August 10-14th – Ages 10-13

Photography is more than just pointing and shooting, it’s a decision making process. In addition to being a fun way to express yourself, photography is a great way to teach kids to look carefully at the world around them. All information will be presented in an age appropriate and FUN environment using games and activities that will teach the basic concepts of digital photography. We will use the Metro to take field trips to locations that campers will choose. The National Zoo, Museums and the Arboretum are a few choices. The day will also include free time. Campers will create a portfolio of their work including reflections on their images. Cost includes all supplies and printing fees.
We will cover the following..
Proper camera handling
Basic photography techniques
Photography etiquette
Choosing what and when to shoot (composition)
Uploading, saving and editing images
Choosing what images to keep
Reading a photograph
Telling a story with a photograph
The Digital Darkroom – Every Photo Tells a Story $285 (5 days) 9am-3pm
June 29 – July 3rd – Ages 10-13 -
August 17th – August 21st – Ages 10-13
Limit 9 campers
For 10-13 year olds that have completed Photography Fun or who have a basic understanding of how to use their camera (Please contact me if you are not sure). Campers will be required to photograph a “day in their life” and bring the digital image files with them (on a disk or memory card) to Camp on Monday. More information will be provided after registration.
- Campers will take things to the next level by learning the basics of the “digital darkroom”… uploading (to a computer) and sorting their images, choosing the right images to tell their story, basic editing, and preparation of images for printing. The final project will be a “Day in the Life” photo-book or journal created by the camper using the images taken prior to this week of camp. Campers will learn basic photojournalism through this project and some writing and self reflection will be encouraged. There will be a daily photography practice that focuses on intermediate photography concepts, using Photoshop, and the idea of using photography to tell a story. Price includes printing of Campers images, photo-journals and supplies
I had a phone call from a friend on Thursday. She’s a mom with a lot on her plate right now and said she just needed a creative outlet. Doing something creative has been shown to reduce one’s stress. And as a photographer anytime I can disappear into the view finder I emerge a calmer and more peaceful woman. So get your camera out and take some photographs.
This friend just needed some direction on what to photograph. And I found the answer in Skirt! magazine…I absolutely love Skirt! magazine. Take a photograph every hour of your day and don’t worry about light, settings, just put your camera on program and shoot until you get something you like. Put them all together at the end of the day. You can print out one from each hour and put them in an album, frame or an envelope with the date and time of each photograph. Stay tuned for the results of my day.
Cheers,
Jessica
P.S. You can pick up Skirt! Magazine at your local Farm Fresh here in Hampton Roads. Sorry Washingtonians…you’ll just have to be happy with the photograph.

I was recently asked if the upcoming Feb 28 class in Norfolk will focus on theory or picture taking. The answer is both. You need a little bit of theory about how the camera works in order to understand how to get what you want. After that little bit of theory is taught we will quickly move into picture taking. The goal is for you to walk away with an understanding of the basics in not so technical terms. There will be no fractions or equations in this class! It also does not matter if you have a point and shoot camera or a digital SLR.
Cheers,
Jessica
